Tarahumara
The Tarahumara
The Tarahumara call themselves "Raramuri," meaning "foot runners." and are known for their long distance running ability. Still living an ancient migratory lifestyle, 60,000 Tarahumarans remain in the Copper Canyons of Northern Mexico, having retreated there from Spanish explorers over five hundred years ago. They lead a subsistence lifestyle, farming corn and beans, and move flocks of cattle, sheep and goats from the high mountain peaks into the valleys every winter. They speak their own language, derived from native Uto-Aztecan dialects, although some also speak Spanish.
Known for their exceptional weaving crafts, many still wear their colorful native clothing. Diminutive and soft spoken, their charm is evident, it is a priviledge and a pleasure to be in their presence.
